Fort Sill National Cemetery

Fort Sill National Cemetery is a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs national cemetery in southwestern Oklahoma near Elgin. Established in 2001, it provides burial space for U.S. military veterans and their eligible family members as part of the national cemetery system.

The setting is characteristic of the southern Great Plains: broad, open prairie stretching in every direction, with gently rolling terrain and big, unobstructed skies that shift dramatically with the weather. Winds often move across the landscape with little to block them, giving the area a sense of openness and space that feels larger than the cemetery itself. In spring and summer, the grounds are framed by deep green grass and wide sunlight; in autumn, the tones soften into gold and brown; and in winter, the landscape can feel stark and quiet under a pale sky.

The cemetery design follows the traditional national cemetery style, with uniform headstones arranged in precise rows that create a strong visual rhythm across the landscape. The contrast between the strict order of the burial sections and the natural openness of the prairie gives the site a calm, contemplative atmosphere. It includes in-ground burial areas, a columbarium for cremated remains, a scattering garden, and committal shelters for services.

Military funeral honors are regularly conducted for eligible veterans, adding a formal and ceremonial presence to an otherwise quiet environment. While it is associated geographically with nearby Fort Sill, it operates independently under the VA and functions as a dedicated national resting place for those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
