The Patriot Soil Flag will soon carry soil from veterans’ cemeteries across all 50 states, as well as from Arlington National Cemetery.
Honoring All Those Who ServedFrom the sacred ground of more than 50,000 American heroes rises a flag unlike any other in history. The Patriot Soil Flag, custom-crafted by Gettysburg Flag Works, is a one-of-a-kind American flag in which every star holds a clear vial of soil gathered from veterans’ cemeteries across all 50 states and reverently blended with soil from Arlington National Cemetery.
Each vial represents thousands of resting places. Each star becomes a guardian of sacrifice.
This is not a flag honoring celebrities or officials. It honors the men and women who served — and those who never came home.
The Patriot Soil Flag
Uniting every state with soil from over 50,000 veteran heroes — with a goal of over 1,000,000The Patriot Soil Flag, an initiative of the Patriot Soil Project, is a decade-long mission of remembrance, gratitude, and national unity. It honors America’s veterans by respectfully preserving small samples of soil from the places where they rest—creating a powerful, living tribute to their service and sacrifice.
Since its founding in 2014, Gary and Mary Robinson have traveled across all 50 states, collecting soil from more than 50,000 veterans’ graves. Along their journey, Gary has personally delivered the “Salute of Honor” to over 1,000,000 veterans, recognizing their courage, dedication, and commitment to our nation.
Each soil sample is gathered with reverence and care, then united within a single flag—symbolizing the strength, sacrifice, and shared history of all 50 states. With continued support from communities nationwide, the project is working toward its goal of collecting 1,000,000 soil samples, forming a national memorial built by and for the American people.
This ongoing effort ensures that every veteran’s legacy has the opportunity to be included. Whenever possible, soil is respectfully collected at the time of a veteran’s interment, preserving their memory within this enduring tribute. The Patriot Soil Flag stands as a solemn promise: no service will be forgotten, and no sacrifice will go unrecognized.
Sacred Soil of American Heroes
The Patriot Soil Flag contains sacred soil from some of the most revered military resting places in the United States, including Arlington National Cemetery, along with soil gathered from the graves of both well-known figures and countless unknown heroes.
Among those represented are individuals whose lives helped shape the nation—from President and general Zachary Taylor, to Civil War commander George Armstrong Custer, Declaration of Independence signer Lyman Hall, Pledge of Allegiance author Francis Bellamy, frontiersman Wild Bill Hickok, and Kermit Roosevelt, who served in both World Wars. This collection also includes soil gathered from the resting places of Alvin C. York, widely regarded as America’s most celebrated World War I hero, and SSGT Barry Sadler, Green Beret medic, Vietnam veteran, and the writer and performer of “The Ballad of the Green Berets.” Their stories stand alongside thousands of others whose names may not be widely known, but whose service is equally honored.
This collection reflects the full scope of American military history, encompassing sacrifices made in conflicts from the Revolutionary War to the present day, including the War of 1812, Civil War, Spanish–American War, World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Global War on Terror.
It honors those who earned the nation’s highest distinctions—including recipients of the Medal of Honor and other valor awards—as well as prisoners of war, those killed in action, and all who served with distinction. The soil also reflects the diversity of American service, including the Code Talkers, Buffalo Soldiers, and the many specialized units and citizens who answered the call to serve.
From the celebrated to the unknown, each sample carries a story. Together, they form a unified tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and enduring spirit of America’s veterans.
Following The Flag
The Patriot Soil Flag is embarking on a historic journey across all 50 states, offering Americans a unique opportunity to connect personally with this national tribute. At each stop, individuals may hold the flag, take commemorative photographs, and reflect on the sacrifices it represents.
As the flag travels, it will return to many of the cemeteries where soil was originally collected. These visits will include opportunities to witness and participate in the ongoing collection process, as well as ceremonial moments in which each state’s soil is symbolically connected to its corresponding star on the flag.
Through the Patriot Soil Flag website, supporters can follow the journey in real time—exploring each state’s contribution, viewing photographs, and tracing the flag’s path across the country. This shared experience allows people everywhere to take part in honoring those who served.
At the conclusion of its journey, the Patriot Soil Flag will be presented to the President of the United States, with the goal of securing a permanent home at the Smithsonian Institution. There, it will stand as a lasting national monument—preserving the stories, service, and sacrifice of America’s veterans for generations to come.
