NORTH DAKOTA
Fargo National Cemetery
Fargo National Cemetery is a United States Department of Veterans Affairs national cemetery located near Harwood, just outside Fargo, North Dakota. It was dedicated in 2019 as the first national cemetery in the state, created to provide a closer and more accessible burial option for veterans and eligible family members across North Dakota and the surrounding rural region.
The cemetery spans over 30 acres and is designed to serve tens of thousands of interments over time. It includes traditional burial plots, a columbarium for cremated remains, a memorial wall for those without remains available for burial, and a committal shelter for funeral services. Military honors are commonly provided during services, reflecting the cemetery’s role in recognizing and honoring U.S. military service.
Fargo National Cemetery was established because many veterans in the region previously had to travel long distances to other national cemeteries in neighboring states. It is part of a broader federal effort to expand access to veterans’ burial benefits in rural areas.
Today, it functions both as an active burial site and a place of remembrance, offering a quiet, formal setting where families and visitors can honor military service and reflect on sacrifice and national service.
