Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery

The Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery is a state-operated military cemetery in Boulder City, Nevada, established to provide a dignified and accessible final resting place for U.S. veterans and their eligible family members in southern Nevada.

Set against the desert landscape not far from Las Vegas, the cemetery spans roughly 79 acres and is designed with the quiet, formal structure typical of veterans cemeteries: uniform headstones, carefully maintained grounds, and open views of surrounding desert mountains. The setting is intentionally simple and reflective, emphasizing service and honor rather than ornate memorials.

Its primary purpose is to ensure that veterans in the region have access to burial benefits close to home. Eligible veterans receive burial at no cost, which includes the gravesite, opening and closing of the grave, perpetual care, and a government headstone or marker. Spouses and dependent children may also be interred there.

The cemetery is also a place of ongoing military tradition. Funeral services frequently include full military honors—such as flag presentation and the playing of Taps—and community organizations often participate in ceremonies during holidays like Memorial Day and Veterans Day. These events reinforce its role not just as a burial site, but as a living place of remembrance.

While it does not contain nationally famous burials, its significance lies in its purpose: it serves thousands of Nevada veterans, especially those who might otherwise have had to travel long distances for burial in a national veterans cemetery. In that sense, it functions as both a local memorial space and a broader symbol of recognition for military service in the region.
