IDAHO
Idaho State Veterans Cemetery
The Idaho State Veterans Cemetery – Blackfoot is a modern, state-run veterans cemetery created to serve military families across eastern Idaho with a dignified and accessible final resting place. Located just outside Blackfoot, it opened in December 2020 after years of planning to reduce long travel to other cemeteries in the state.
Spanning about 40 acres, it follows the design principles of national veterans cemeteries—order, equality, and simplicity. The grounds include traditional graves, cremation plots, columbarium niches, and memorial areas, all arranged in clean, symmetrical rows with uniform headstones. A committal shelter supports military funeral honors and ceremonies like Memorial Day and Veterans Day.
The setting is a key part of its character. Surrounded by farmland and open plains, it has a quiet, rural atmosphere with wide views of the Idaho landscape. The grounds are well-kept but still developing, with young trees and open lawns giving it a spacious, uncrowded feel.
Because it is relatively new, there are no widely recognized notable burials. Instead, it reflects its purpose of honoring everyday veterans and their families. Overall, it combines the structure of a military cemetery with the openness of rural Idaho, creating a peaceful place of remembrance.
